Benign Liver Lesions

Non cancerous liver lesions often generate no symptoms and are only a problem when they grow to a large size and start compressing the surrounding organs or may have a risk of becoming malignant (cancerous). In most patients, they are diagnosed during a routine ultrasound due to another issue.

Proper diagnosis and if necessary, close monitoring by our team of liver specialists here at The Liver Centre WA can give you peace-of-mind. If you have questions about benign liver lesions, please contact the team and we will be happy to answer your questions.

FNH or Focal Nodular Hyperplasia

FNHs are more prevalent in women. Larger lesions in the left side of the liver can trigger stomach compression symptoms. The risk of becoming malignant is extremely small.

Thanks to the use of more advanced imaging techniques such as MRI for definitive diagnosis, these FNH are now less likely to be surgically removed, because they are non-cancerous. If you are anxious about lesions in your liver, it is recommended to speak to one of our liver specialists at The Liver Centre WA in Perth, to plan for an MRI so you can be more assured and exclude any type of malignant liver lesions.

FNH often presents a central scar on imaging by CT scan and MRI.

Adenoma

liver lesionsIf there is a suspicion of an adenoma, then your liver specialist will insist on getting a thorough diagnosis. Adenomas are known to be a benign liver tumour, but can cause issues down the track. Adenomas are most frequently found in women, with a strong suggested link to the use of the contraceptive pill and oestrogen, or to obesity. Large size lesion (over 5cms in diameter) can in some case become malignant and should be removed or closely monitored.

If your doctor suggests that you are presenting this type of liver lesion, then our team of specialist doctors and surgeons will go out of their way to give you a clear diagnosis and to plan your treatment adapted to your personal needs and situation.  We focus on excellence in surgical outcomes and we also value the importance of kindness and quality patient care. You will find that our entire team works together to provide the highest possible level of trust and comfort, as you plan to undergo liver treatment or liver surgery.

Haemangioma

This type of liver lesions is also known as cavernous haemangiomas and they are non-cancerous. It’s estimated that up to 10% of the population may have haemangiomas in the liver, and they are more common in women. Most lesions of this type won’t cause any problems. If they grow to a very large size, they can cause symptoms of discomfort or can put the patient at risk or catastrophic bleed in case of trauma. Our specialist surgeons may discuss the option of surgical removal if this situation was existing for you.

Classically on CT scan or MRI the contrast agent injected slowly enters into the haemangioma helping to establish a definitive diagnosis.

Whatever the type of liver lesion, our team will work together to make sure you fully understand your diagnosis. Then, we will discuss the most convenient, personalised treatment options and also make sure that you receive ample support and comfort as we plan your treatment together. So if you have any questions about this type of liver conditions, don’t hesitate to contact the team here at The Liver Centre WA in Perth. We never give up on your health.
